Farriery Presentation Skills

About the sessions -

Delivered by Andrew Bowyer FWCF and Paul Horner FWCF, Farriery Presentation Skills is a regular online Zoom meeting for farriers looking to grow confidence when speaking with others, build communication skills, share knowledge , experience and stay up to date in a supportive environment.

Learning how to communicate with other farriers, clients or paraprofessionals is a fundamental skill in farriery. Developing IT skills and creating a presentation is a fantastic way for us to learn, exchange ideas and deliver to larger audiences.

If delivering a presentation isn't your thing, you can still participate and benefit by watching and learning from a variety of different speakers and subjects related to farriery and engaging with a Q and A session at the end.

What's involved? -

Supported by Paul and Andrew, each session will be aimed at developing the skills and confidence to be able to put together and deliver your own presentations, (which isn’t as daunting as you might think!). You will learn to design aesthetically appealing slides, that engage your audience and are easy to present. By following a simple structure and planning a the format, before opening the laptop, you will be able to deliver polished presentations on time.

You will also get the opportunity to deliver a short farriery presentation to a supportive audience, receive questions and get constructive feedback. If delivering a presentation isn't your thing, you can still participate by watching and learning from a variety of different speakers and subjects related to Farriery and engaging with a Q and A session at the end. The audience is just as important in this environment and a good discussion creates a way for everyone to learn and improve.

Format -

Ahead of each session 2 members of the group volunteer to give a short presentation on an engaging and relevant farriery topic. Those giving the presentations will be coached and guided by Paul and Andrew -

Meet Paul and Andrew -

Experienced mentors, both Paul and Andrew are well known for being friendly, encouraging and relatable. Their CV's may be impressive, but there is no need to be intimidated!

Paul Horner FWCF

Paul is a Somerset-based farrier who qualified in 1997 and has over 20 years of experience in professional practice. Paul has a strong interest in sport horse performance and particularly enjoys collaborating with veterinary surgeons, riders and other industry professionals to support optimal performance through a multi-factorial approach to the equine athlete.

Paul worked as a referral remedial farrier for Bristol University Veterinary School from 1998 until its closure in 2020. Paul also served as lead farrier for the International Olympic Committee at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He is also a British Equestrian Federation Farrier within the Podium Pathway for Eventing.

Paul's approach is centred on practical, evidence-based assessment incorporating both static and dynamic evaluation which informed his 2025 BFBA Farrier Focus lecture titled ‘How Conformation and Posture can help us Shoe Hind Feet’.

Andrew Bowyer FWCF

Andrew is a Devon-based farrier who began his career in 1995. After working abroad in New Zealand, Australia and Mexico he returned home in 2004 and established a busy mixed practice. He is an approved training farrier (ATF) and has successfully mentored many apprentices through to qualification.

In 2006, Andrew was appointed as a Team GB Farrier for the British Equestrian Federation, a position he held for 18 years. Initially working with the Para Dressage Programme, he later supported the Dressage and Show jumping squads as part of the Podium Pathway Programme. This role involved close collaboration with riders, veterinary surgeons, physiotherapist and home farriers to optimise hoof care and performance preparation ahead of competition.

Andrew regularly lectures both nationally and internationally and has presented on a a range of topics relating to equine biomechanics, pathology and therapeutic farriery. Recent presentations include Mechanical Orientation and Performance Inhibitors Associated with Sidebone: How Understanding Mechanical Loading of the Foot Can Help Formulate an Appropriate Shoeing Plan, delivered at the BFBA Farrier Focus conference in 2025.
