About the course -

Participating in or observing dissection of the equine limb is one the the best ways to develop practical understanding of functional anatomy and ultimately improve standards of farriery. Through a range of presentations and dissections Stephen Hill FWCF builds on existing knowledge and demonstrates how the practical application of biomechanics can improve the ways in which we manage the horses under our care.

Key Features

A great opportunity to learn from Stephen Hill FWCF and benefit from his knowledge and enthusiasm for functional anatomy of the equine limb. Through dissection the 2D images that we learn about in books are bought to life and the practical application of functional anatomy in farriery can be better understood. This courses runs from Stephen's bespoke facility for equine and farriery education.

Format

Our courses are flexible and tailored to each attendees objectives and specific interests. Our dissection days will often run a follows -

  • Mid limb dissection demonstration

  • Pairs practical mid limb dissection and identification of structures

  • Distal limb dissection demonstration

  • Pairs practical distal limb dissection and identification of structures

  • Stay and reciprocal apparatus demonstration

  • Hoof capsule/foot dissection demonstration

  • Pairs practical/foot dissection and demonstration of structures

A leg press is set up throughout the day to show how internal structures of the distal limb work during in movement as well as a professional photo box, lighting and digital microscope to create quality, detailed anatomical images.

A farrier with over 25 years experience, Stephen is also a lifelong horseman and established educator. Stephen is hugely enthusiastic about improving equine welfare and soundness through a deeper understanding of the equine limb and it practical application in farriery. His students report the knowledge and expertise shared in these session to be highly beneficial and provide a renewed enthusiasm for their work.
